The 111-year-old Pakka Pul, connecting Old Lucknow with Sitapur Road, is set for a major upgrade. As per the UP Bridge Corporation’s plan, a new 4-lane bridge will be constructed alongside the old structure to enhance traffic flow.
Last year, a comprehensive survey of Pakka Pul was conducted due to its age, deeming the bridge unsafe for heavy vehicle movement. Consequently, four-wheelers were completely restricted on the route, though two-wheelers continued to use the bridge.
To accommodate the growing vehicular traffic, a wider bridge will now be constructed, with the UP State government approving the required budget for the project.
New Pakka Pul ineffective for rising traffic demands
Following the closure of the 111-year-old Pakka Pul, four-wheelers have been rerouted to the New Pakka Pul, a two-lane bridge located further ahead of the old structure. However, the New Pakka Pul has proven insufficient for the area’s traffic demands, often resulting in congestion along the bridge.
With a comprehensive upgrade plan now in progress, the commute across this stretch is expected to improve significantly. Currently, authorities are finalising the DPR, after which pre-construction activities will commence.
According to the UP Bridge Corporation (Setu Nigam), the new bridge is projected to be completed within two years after the construction begins.
