Mumbai can’t seem to catch a break. With heavy monsoon pelting down, rains lashed the financial capital for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday. The city witnessed delayed local train services on the Central Railway route following a wall collapse on the railway track.
In light of this, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai along with adjoining areas such as Raigad and Thane.
A red alert indicates the probability of heavy rainfall in at several parts of the city, and extremely heavy rainfall- above 204.5 mm, at isolated places. The IMD has also predicted a possibility of occasional strong winds blowing at speeds between 40-60 km/h.
Heavy rainfall in Mumbai shuts down local beaches
To avoid casualties, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), issued an order prohibiting people from visiting any of the city beaches on the days when an orange or red alert warning has been issued. During non-alert days, the beaches in Mumbai shall be operational for the general public only between 6 am to 10 am.
