Inside Bandra’s “all-new” Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir
Originally an open-air theatre named after the legendary Marathi singer and actor Bal Gandharva, this venue was leased to the K Raheja Foundation by the BMC in 1992 for redevelopment. After years of delays and hurdles, the new, state-of-the-art auditorium finally opened its doors in August 2016, offering a much-needed space for performances, community events, and artistic pursuits.
Designed by a Singapore-based architect, the revamped auditorium now features a 740-seat capacity with luxurious balcony boxes and advanced lighting and sound system. The closed structure allows for better acoustics, a vital improvement for noise-sensitive neighbours and monsoon-prone Mumbai. Beyond the main performance hall, the upper floors of Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir are dedicated to practicing various art forms, from tabla and flute to Bharatanatyam and Kathakali.
