Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Mumbai Metro to offer 10% discount to voters on May 20
With Mumbai’s scorching temperatures affecting voter turnout in the Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission of India has taken action to mitigate the heat’s impact. Authorities have been instructed to establish waiting rooms, distribute ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) packets, and ensure drinking water availability at all polling booths on election day.
S Chockalingam, Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra, disclosed plans to organise voters in waiting rooms according to token numbers, to cope with the heat. The turnout during the initial phases fell below 2019 levels, partly attributed to the heat. To address this, the Commission mandated local authorities to enhance measures for increased participation. Additionally, the CEO addressed concerns over fluctuating poll percentages, assuring transparency in data reporting.
As the third phase approaches on May 7, approximately 20.9 million voters across 11 constituencies in Maharashtra are gearing up to cast their ballots, with 258 candidates vying for victory, including 38 from Baramati. Notably, 114 polling booths are designated as critical, with Satara topping the list at 40.
