The scientists of Kanpur’s National Sugar Institute (NSI), a premium research institution, have come up with an innovative tech to prepare organic potash. And at the same time, giving an effective solution for ash produced during ethanol preparation.
These NSI scientists successfully developed a technology to produce potash from the ash exuded. In the manner, potash will be produced naturally, outside mines. Besides, the scope of using potash is abundant, especially in the agriculture sector.
Towards self-sufficiency in potash production
Moreover, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had banned the disposing off of the ash in the open, since it is harmful. Potash is majorly used in fertilizers, for the growth and development of crops.
At present, some 40 lakh metric tonnes of potash is imported every year. Thus, the discovery can enable the country to become self-sufficient in potash production from waste emitted by sugar mills.
The technology developed is also estimated to lead to the production of some six lakh metric tonnes of organic potash annually, making the country less dependent on its import. This will, in turn, save foreign exchange reserves. The cost spent in its making is also deemed to be 75% less than that of the potash imported.
