Residents of Indore and Ujjain have exciting news as plans for the much-anticipated metro project between the two cities are progressing swiftly. Covering a distance of 47 kilometres, the route will include eight stations, beginning at Luv Kush Chauraha in Indore and concluding at Baba Mahakal Lok in Ujjain.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has finalised the alignment and detailed project report (DPR) for the Indore-Ujjain metro, which is set to be submitted to the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation by the end of December.
Hybrid mode, high speed, and connectivity redefined
With an estimated cost of ₹10,000 crore, the metro will operate in hybrid mode, akin to Delhi’s Airport Express Line, enabling trains to reach speeds of 135 kmph while running on viaducts along the existing four-lane highway. The Indore-Ujjain metro will include the following eight stations—Luv Kush Square, Aurobindo College, Baroli, Dharampuri, Sanwer, Nanakheda, Ujjain Engineering College, and Baba Mahakal Lok.
Approximately 70% of the route will follow the existing four-lane road, constructed via viaducts on dividers. Additionally, 20 hectares of land near Revati are being considered for a depot. Though initially planned for completion before Simhastha, financial constraints mean the project launch will now coincide with Ujjain Kumbh Mela 2028. Meanwhile, travellers will have alternate options, including a six-lane road and the Vande Metro train.
Efforts are also underway to extend the metro to Mahakal Lok’s parking area. The metro seeks to improve connectivity, ensuring seamless travel for residents and visitors attending the grand events in Ujjain.
