Mumbai’s global traffic ranking has dropped from the 52nd to the 39th position, in the TomTom International Traffic Speed Index. In 2024, the time required to travel 10 km during peak hours on Mumbai’s roads has increased to 29.26 minutes, up from 21.20 minutes in 2023.
Mumbai’s traffic rank drops, still 6th in India
Although Mumbai’s traffic rank has dropped, it remains the sixth most congested city in India, after Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Pune. Kolkata now leads India’s traffic congestion and holds the second spot globally, surpassing Bengaluru, which has fallen to third.
Mumbai isn’t the only city struggling with traffic. Global cities like London and Dublin are experiencing similar issues. Experts caution that infrastructure projects like the Coastal Road and flyovers won’t fully solve the crisis. They recommend implementing congestion taxes, odd-even vehicle schemes, and enhancing public transport.
With about 2,300 cars per kilometre of road, Mumbai’s traffic and pollution problems will persist without significant reforms. These findings come from the TomTom 14th annual traffic index, which analysed traffic patterns in 500 cities across 62 countries.
