Ranked at the 8th spot in the list of the most polluted cities in the world by IQAir, Kanpur is one of the many Indian districts with distressing levels of air pollution. As per a study conducted by the University of Birmingham and University College London (UCL), pollutant particles detrimental to public health are increasing continuously in the city’s atmosphere. Through the research, it was observed that PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide have risen alarmingly, deteriorating Kanpur’s air quality.

The recent detections are based on the data collected by the satellites touring the skies of Kanpur. Studying the swelling levels of air pollution, the study concluded increased vehicle count, rapid industrialization and questionable impact of pollution control policies as the prime causes behind it. Amongst them all, urgent attention is required for upgrading the pollution control norms because they clearly fail to usher desired results.
While economic development is increasing its speed every day, its harsh effects on the environment are succinctly noticeable in the umpteen studies that uncover worrisome results. Interpreting the figures for a long period of time from 2005 to 2018, the research uncovers the picture of a neglected environment amid fast-paced progress.
Kanpur Metro to reduce vehicular pollution in the city!
The Kanpur Metro project is one of the few striking schemes that bank on the idea of sustainable development. An efficient and emission-free means of public transport, the metro network is expected to reduce environmental adulteration by reducing the usage of fuel-run vehicles.
