Mango is the national fruit of India for several reasons, one being the myriad varieties that grow here. Adding to the list of Malihabadi Dasheris from Lucknow and Noorjahan grown near Indore, are the Miyazaki Mangoes which are touted to the most expensive in the world. This variety is native to Japan and has been grown by a couple from Madhya Pradesh, who had to hire guards and watchdogs to prevent the theft of these rare and costly mangoes.
Commonly known as Sun Egg in Japan
Orchardist couple from Madhya Pradesh planted saplings last year that bore unusually coloured, ruby red mangoes. Unexpectedly and fortunately, they turned out to be Miyazaki Mangoes which are known to be the world’s most expensive mangoes. Last year, they fetched a price of ₹2.70 lakh per kilogram in the international market.
After the news broke about this valuable variety of mango, thieves trespassed the orchard premises and stole. In a bid to thwart future such attempts, reportedly, the couple has hired 4 guards and 6 dogs to protect the 7 mangoes trees. The State Horticulture Department is yet to inspect this fruit and certify whether it’s a hybrid or original.
In Japan, these mangoes are also referred to as Sun Eggs owing to their bright red colour which is in stark contrast with the green and yellow shades that are locally available in India. Though the couple hasn’t started selling the produce yet wealthy consumers have already begun fawning over it and are offering an extravagant amount to procure Miyazaki Mangoes.
