The Lucknow Smart City campaign has undertaken yet another project to boost the ease of living and civic adaptability of the city, which includes the task of sewer line repair. Under this development programme, smart sensors will be installed at a height in the sewer manholes, across the city.
The Project Manager of Lucknow Jal Nigam, Piyush Maurya, informed that these sensors will send an alert to the command centre, if and when the drainage water reaches a certain level in the sewer lines. This will ensure the timely cleaning of these, to prevent choking and blocks.
Smart sewer line development programme in Lucknow
At present, sewer line repair work is widely going on across Lucknow, raising several troubles for the city dwellers. However, the district administration has assured that all lines will be cleaned and repaired by the end of December this year. Besides this, the sewer lines at Qaiserbagh, Lalbagh, Aminabad, Golaganj and Hazratganj have been lined up for a special upgrade, under the area-based development plan pertaining to the Smart City Scheme.
A sensor device will be fitted in the manholes here, which will keep a check on the rising level of sewer water in the trenches. It will automatically send a direct signal to the command centre in Lucknow, relaying the need for cleaning without a public complaint. This smart upgrade will also prevent the issue of overflowing sewer water on the roads and disrupting easy commute.
Initially, the task of laying sewer lines was launched under the JNURM scheme about 10 years ago. Here, only those areas were included which did not have a sewer line at all. All work in the ambit of this programme was reportedly conducted at a cost of ₹1700 crore. The new plan now does not include the areas covered in the old scheme.
As per an estimate, a total length of 78 km is being covered by the smart sewer lines, of which, the work of about 50 km has been completed. Officials have highlighted that this scheme links around 38,000 households. The benefits will be offered at a budget of ₹208 crores, they further added.
Project Manager Piyush Maurya also said that the scheme related work was delayed due to the COVID spell. While presently, the department is looking at a December deadline, the work would have finished months earlier had it not been for the infection spread.
