The story behind the names
Mahmud Begada had his sights set on Bir Rai of Idar State and his fort. But he didn’t storm in with swords blazing. Instead, he did something unexpected: he married Bir Rai’s daughter. This historic marriage pact not only secured his rule but also gave its name to the gateway – Idariyo Darwajo – where Sultan Mahmud Begada began his journey for Idar.
As time flowed on, the gateway transformed into a vital passage to the Delhi Sultanate, earning the title Delhi Darwaza. It became a critical link to the capital, facilitating trade and cultural exchange in the region.
The ever-changing face of Delhi Darwaja
Delhi Darwaza is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, blending elements of Indo-Islamic, Persian, and Mughal styles. As you stand beneath its towering arch, you can’t help but admire the intricately carved stone work and the attention to detail that has stood the test of time. The central archway is flanked by two smaller arches, each adorned with beautifully designed motifs and calligraphy. The imposing minarets on either side give the gate an air of regality.
While time has weathered Delhi Darwaza, its charm remains intact, thanks to the efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The gate underwent extensive restoration work in recent years, bringing back its former glory. Today, it stands as a testament to Ahmedabad’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage for generations to come.
