Ahmedabad’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) has suspended Rapido’s services for 30 days, citing violations of the Aggregator Rules 2020. Complaints from rickshaw unions highlighted the use of two-wheelers with white number plates instead of mandatory yellow ones for commercial ferrying operations. Many vehicles also lacked compulsory insurance. Despite multiple notices, Rapido failed to respond, prompting the suspension.
RTO official J.J. Patel said, “The RTO had only issued an aggregator licence for three-wheeler auto rickshaws to Rapido, but they violated the rules by using non-transport two-wheeler vehicles through their online app. They continued operating these vehicles even after their documents expired, putting passenger safety at risk.” He warned of permanent licence cancellation if violations persist.
Meanwhile, Uber has been given 15 days to stop its two-wheeler service, as its licence only covers three and four-wheelers. The Ahmedabad Rickshaw Association raised concerns about these practices, leading to RTO intervention.
Both platforms have gained popularity for their affordable services, but rickshaw unions argue such operations flout regulations and undermine fair competition.
