Goa's lifeguard agency issues advisory against adventure sports amid increasing accidents

Many of the images and videos posted online are located at extremely dangerous locations amidst steep rocks with jagged edges.

The Goa government on Thursday appointed a private lifeguard agency to avert the horrors of accidents at several tourist locations and otherwise. As per reports, the unit has issued an advisory to warn against such scenarios, urging people to stay away from rocky cliffs and choppy waters, especially during the monsoon season. This move has come on the heels of a swimming ban in the seas off Goa's beaches, implemented due to the same concern.

Beware of jagged edges, steep rocks & unmanned locations in Goa

Goa's lifeguard agency, Drishti Marine, issued a safety advisory in the wake of a fatal incident that claimed the lives of three persons over the last few days. Of these, one youngster slipped from a rocky cliff, while the other two drowned to death in the rough seas off Utorda beach, in South Goa.

"Beachgoers are advised to stay away from rocky areas and cliffs along the coastline. The rocks are very slippery during monsoon season and also wave height, intensity and frequencies are very high and one can easily get washed out," states the advisory issued by Drishti Marine, in charge of safeguarding lives along Goa's coastline.

"At Utorda (beach) two young males lost their lives to the rough sea. Such incidents are heart-breaking. Many of the images and videos posted online are located at extremely dangerous locations amidst steep rocks with jagged edges, areas with loose rocks and locations prone to rip currents and fierce waves. Many such locations are at beaches that are unmanned by lifeguards. This poses a serious threat to visitors," Navin Awasthi, Operations Head, Drishti Marine added.

Mumbai suburban 'local' trains will not resume operations for the general public.

The Maharashtra government on Monday decided to continue with Level-3 COVID curbs in 14 out of the 36 districts here, including state capital Mumbai. While partial relaxations are awarded to the other 22 cities, the high caseload and emergence of fresh infections in the listed regions have discouraged the administration from withdrawing the restrictions in these regions.

Parallelly, the state has authorised the local civic body to decide the level of curbs in 3 of these 14 districts, namely Mumbai, Mumbai suburban and Thane. As such, the BMC has permitted all shops (except malls) to open here till 10 PM. The local trains will, however, remain shut for all passengers.
