In an attempt to save the life of a 40-year-old patient suffering from tuberculosis, a rare lung decortication surgery was performed by a team of doctors at a government-run Super Specialty Hospital (SSH). As per Dr. Ankur Goyal, the patient was suffering from tuberculosis for several years. Due to the delayed treatment, his right lung accumulated pus in a life-threatening quantity, causing damage that would have been irreversible if not treated immediately.

The surgery was performed to remove pus and restore the shape of the lungs impacted by the long illness from tuberculosis. This surgical procedure went on for more than four hours. Since the operation was long and complex, there was a need to keep the patient on a ventilator for one day, ensuring the proper restoration of the treated organ.
Cardiac surgeon, Dr. Hemant Namdev performed the surgery alongside Dr. Ankur Goyal. The team was assisted by an anaesthetist, Dr. Nimesh Jain. Medical superintendent, Dr. AD Bhatnagar said, “the free surgery performed at Super Specialty Hospital under Ayushman Bharat Scheme, could cost up to ₹1.5 lakhs in private hospitals.”
The scheme provides support to the economically vulnerable individuals in the country who are in need of healthcare facilities. It covers people like ragpickers, house help, families with no male members, beggars, sanitation workers, etc. from both rural and urban areas.

Ayushman Bharat Yojana scheme is paperless and offers cashless hospitalization cover at public hospitals and network private medical institutes. Ayushman Bharat health insurance covers the cost of hospitalization, pre-hospitalization, medication, and post-hospitalization expenses incurred during the treatment, which is applicable to almost all secondary and tertiary care procedures.
