Living in Lucknow, we are all familiar with the routes and bridges that run alongside Kurail Nullah. It’s hard to miss the unpleasant stench emanating from the drain-like waterbody and the accumulation of waste and garbage in its vicinity. Although now, UP government has decided to work towards the revival of the water body.
As a part of the upcoming initiative, the UP CM has instructed officials to conduct a survey of the river channel within a period of 10 days. The officials will conduct a thorough examination of the Sabarmati riverfront project. Following this, the Kukrail revival work could be carried out based on the grounds of the project.
Once an important water channel for the city, now left neglected
Interestingly, the popular Kukrail Nullah is actually a 28-kilometre-long tributary of the Gomti River. Originating near Niwajpur Dasauli village, this water stream terminates in Gomti near the Fun Republic Mall.
Over the course of the last 50 years, this tributary has lost its sheen due to the 17 large drains, that have been releasing waste here.
Revitalization of nearby areas also in plans
In accordance with the directive issued to the relevant authorities, a specialized team will be assembled to formulate strategies aimed at dredging and desilting the river.
In addition to the purification initiatives for the tributary, the development of jogging trails and butterfly parks, as well as the construction of structures such as Chhath Puja Ghats and parking lots is also in plans. Efforts will be made to nurture and enhance the forest cover along Kukrail Nullah, while simultaneously enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
