Its performance in the critical Clean Air Survey 2025 has nosedived, with the capital slipping 10 spots to 15th place, underscoring a growing divide between street-level sanitation and breathable air.

Lucknow is facing a stark contrast between its public image and environmental reality. Despite its impressive leap to 3rd place in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 cleanliness rankings, jumping from 44th the previous year, the city’s performance in the Clean Air Survey 2025 tells a different story. Here, Lucknow has dropped 10 places to 15th, exposing a significant disconnect between visible cleanliness and effective air quality management.
While the Swachh Survekshan success can be credited to advancements in waste processing, the introduction of tech-driven sanitation vehicles, and large-scale green campaigns, the Clean Air Survey exposes lingering challenges. The city’s drop in ranking is largely due to deficiencies in waste management, road dust control, and emissions standards, with several departments, including the Municipal Corporation, RTO, LDA, and Green Gas, falling short of expectations.
The survey evaluates critical areas such as solid waste management, road dust, and industrial emissions, and municipal officials have acknowledged that the decline in air quality performance stems from lapses across multiple departments, not just the corporation.
