In the Bhikhampur area, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has initiated the ‘Urmila Van’ project to develop a 24-acre Miyawaki method forest along the Kukrail River. After clearing years of encroachment, the site will be transformed into a thriving, self-sustaining forest using the Miyawaki method.
Known for its ability to create dense, rapidly growing forests, this technique will allow Urmila Van to flourish in just under a decade, far quicker than the 30-40 years needed by conventional plantations.
50+ native species and natural trails
Over 50 species of native and aquatic plants, such as Banyan, Peepal, Mango, Bamboo, and Lotus, will be planted to improve air quality, promote biodiversity, and restore the local ecosystem. The forest will not feature any concrete structures, with only fencing for security. Raw walking trails will encourage visitors to experience nature up close. A state-of-the-art irrigation system, with underground pipelines and pop-up sprinklers, will ensure efficient watering of the plants.
This project is not just about planting trees, but about reclaiming land for nature, creating a green lung for the city, and improving water quality in the Kukrail River. The initiative is part of a larger environmental vision, aiming to enhance biodiversity, improve flood control, and reduce Lucknow’s heat footprint.
