The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has seen an extraordinary rise in applications for the 2025 admission cycle. Applications surged from 13,534 in 2024 to 5.6 lakh (559,887) this year, marking a dramatic 4,034% increase.
The general MBA programme remains the most sought-after, receiving 2.69 lakh applications. The MBA in Sustainable Management attracted over 2.1 lakh applicants, while the Operations and Supply Chain (OSC) Management programme received 77,000 applications. Of the total applications, nearly one-third were from women.
Impact of IIM brand recognition
According to experts, applications to most IIMs were free this year as they were included in the CAT registration fee. This encouraged students to apply to multiple IIMs, further contributing to the surge in applications.
In 2024, IIM Mumbai was not included in the official IIM admission portal, requiring students to apply separately. This year, its inclusion in the centralised system significantly boosted applications. Professor Manoj Tiwari, Director of IIM Mumbai, was quoted saying, “The rebranding and inclusion in the official IIM admission portal have played a crucial role in attracting more applicants.”
Formerly known as the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering (NITIE), the institute was officially renamed IIM Mumbai in August 2023. This transition has enhanced its reputation and positioned it among the top management institutes in India.
100% placements boost institute’s appeal
IIM Mumbai has achieved 100% placement for its class of 2025, further strengthening its reputation. The total number of job offers increased by over 10% compared to the previous year, making it an even more attractive option for management aspirants.
