The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, warning of intense heat and humidity from April 5 to 7. On Thursday, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 34.5°C, a slight drop from 36.9°C on April 2. However, the relief was short-lived. Sweltering temperatures and heavy humidity will persist, with the mercury expected to climb past 37°C over the weekend. The heat alert extends to Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri as well, indicating the arrival of summer.
Mumbai Weather: Reason behind current conditions
Meteorologists attribute the temperature spike to an anticyclone formation over the Arabian Sea, which is drawing in dry northerly winds. This shift is expected to push temperatures higher while reducing moisture levels, exacerbating heat stress across the region. Urban areas, already prone to heat retention, are likely to feel the impact more acutely.
Relief may come, in the form of weak trough activity
Alongside soaring temperatures, humidity levels remain high, making conditions more uncomfortable. On Thursday, the IMD’s Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded relative humidity levels of 79% and 78%, respectively. Weather experts suggest that while some relief could come in the form of weak trough activity over the region, no significant drop in temperature is expected in the coming days.
Meanwhile, over the past two days, the IMD had forecast the likelihood of light drizzles alongside thunderstorms in Mumbai and its neighbouring districts. While pockets of Mumbai and Thane saw patchy showers on Tuesday night, with the IMD’s Santacruz station recording slight drizzles, there was no rain on Wednesday.
With humidity levels soaring, the IMD has urged residents to take precautions against heat-related discomfort. As the mercury continues its upward trend, Mumbai and its neighbouring districts, including Raigad, Thane and Palgar, are bracing for an extended spell of sweltering conditions.
