It’s a given that unnecessary honking results in noise pollution and has an adverse impact on one’s health. Following this, Mumbai Traffic Police (MTP) has decided to observe ‘No Honking Day’ in the city, on August 9 and 16. The department has appealed to all drivers/riders in Mumbai to help curb notice pollution on these two days, except ambulances, fire brigades and other vehicles on emergency duties.
Further, the press notice specifies that appropriate action will be taken against drivers who blow horns continuously – under Section 194 (F) of Motor Vehicle Act. Action will also be taken against those who have modified silencers/exhaust pipes fitted to their 2 or 4-wheelers – under Section 198 of the Act.
It is paramount to understand that noise pollution causes several health complications. Various laws such as Motor Vehicle Act 1988, Noise Pollution Control Rule 2000, and Environment Protection Act 1996, have laid down guidelines related to noise pollution in India.
Mumbai will be observing No Honking Day on 9th August (Wednesday) & 16th August in an attempt to reduce the growing trend of unnecessary honking.
