According to IMD, we have just experienced the warmest and driest August in India, since 1901. During the month, rainfall in the South Peninsular region and across Central India was recorded to be the lowest in the last 122 years.
The standard rainfall for August has been set at 254.9 mm, but August 2023 recorded a massive deficit with just 162.7 mm of rainfall. Furthermore, the average, maximum, and mean temperatures in India during last month were also recorded to be the highest since 1901.
Rainfall for September is predicted to be normal
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted normal rainfall in September, with 91%-109% precipitation. In spite of that, showers this month are unlikely to make up for the massive August deficit. As a result, we might see increase inflation with price of pulses soaring high.
Yet, the first week of September is being predicted to stay dry in Central India, especially in Mumbai and surrounding regions. This dry spell is expected to be followed by normal and above-normal rainfall on and around Janmashtami.
