Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, located approximately 63 km from Ahmedabad will remain closed to visitors on the 25th and 26th of January as the Gujarat Forest Department conducts a preliminary bird census. This initiative aims to meticulously count and record the avian population across the sanctuary’s 120.82 sq km ecological zone.
100 experts and volunteers to collaborate on Nal Sarovar bird census
Approximately 100 ornithologists, experts, and volunteers will collaborate to carry out the census. The sanctuary has been divided into 46 zones to ensure thorough coverage. The census will focus on the diverse bird species that inhabit this vital wetland, particularly during the winter months when migratory birds such as flamingos, pelicans, and storks flock to the area.
The Chief Wildlife Warden of Gujarat has invoked Sections 28 and 33 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, to prohibit public entry during the census days. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Dr. Jaipal Singh, has urged the public to cooperate with the forest department, highlighting the importance of maintaining a disturbance-free environment to ensure accurate results.
The bird census will provide crucial data to aid conservation efforts, ensuring that Nal Sarovar continues to thrive as a haven for avian and aquatic life. Authorities have appealed to citizens and tourists to support the effort by adhering to the restrictions during these two days.
