The Food Processing Department in Uttar Pradesh has set up Government Food Science Training Centres in 10 districts of the state, including Kanpur. As per the latest developments, these institutes will offer specialised diploma courses for training the youth in a range of culinary activities, including bakery and confectionery. This initiative aims to encourage the development of new skills amongst the youth of the state, in a bid to promote employment within the hospitality sector.

The aforesaid training centres have been established in 10 districts of UP, namely Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Agra, Bareilly, Moradabad and Meerut. The one-year diploma courses will feature trades of food processing, culinary arts, bakery and confectionery to train over 1000 beneficiaries every year.
The state government has been training the youth at the State Food Science Training Centres for the past 4.5 years. In this span of time, 609 students have been trained in one-year food processing trade diploma while 597 got skilled in the one-year bakery and confectionery trade diploma. Besides, 598 were a part of one-year culinary arts trade diploma.

Along with one-year diploma courses, short-term hobby courses in these institutes have also registered significant admission of young chefs. Around 1,166 aspirants opted for a one-month part-time Bakery & Confectionery Course and 972 participated in the one-month part-time cooking course. On the other hand, 1938 trainees passed out from the one-month integrated cookery, bakery, confectionery and food preservation course.
The number of seats in the MSc Food Technology course at Lucknow’s Government Institute of Food Processing Technology have been increased from 30 to 40. This will aid in driving up the induction of experts in the food processing industries.
