After Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has continued this environment-friendly expedition in Kanpur too. Recently, Kanpur Metro’s Priority Corridor, running between IIT and Motijheel, has received an ISO 14001 certification for environment management & ISO 45001 approval for safety management. As per this, not only will the citizens of Kanpur receive a convenient mode of transportation but it will also be ensured that this project makes the city greener in myriad ways.
Implementing the latest technology to conserve energy
Special arrangements to efficiently manage and conserve electricity, water and trees, have been made by the authorities overseeing the Kanpur Metro Project. Among the several steps taken to ensure that this metro project is environment friendly, it has been decided that the metro trains will be equipped with Regenerative Braking Technology.
This technology helps in the conservation of energy generated when brakes are pulled, by using it back in the metro system. Other electrical installations at the stations, including lifts, will also implement this technique. The energy thus saved amounts to almost 45% of what was being initially used. Apart from this, LED lights and solar panels will be installed at metro depots and stations to further conserve energy.
Water conservation through recycling
To treat sewage water, the Polytechnic Depot will be equipped with a ‘Zero Discharge Facility’ where wastewater will be recycled and reused, rather than being directly discharged. There will also be a water treatment plant that will recycle the water discharged from cleaning activities done in places like the kitchen and washrooms.
An automatic washing plant will be installed, which will recycle the chemical-rich water which flows from the repair of trains. Further, around 180 pits will be constructed along the Priority Corridor which shall assist in the task of rainwater conservation, read reports.
Eco-friendly design to maintain greenery
It has also been mentioned that if a situation arises where trees have to be removed due to the underway project, then efforts are made to relocate them to proper sites. If a tree cannot be translocated, then it is felled but 10 saplings are planted in its place instead, to compensate.
Moreover, saplings are also being planted in the centre of the Elevated Corridor of Kanpur Metro, so that the city’s green cover is restored. Consequently, it can be stated that UPMRC’s approach towards the designs of metro projects, has definitely included an eco-friendly vision.
