Adding to the premier services available at Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, the doctors at this centre will also perform liver transplants now. While the healthcare facility was dependent on help from the external staff for liver transplants till now, the procedure shall be conducted by an exclusively internal team now. For this purpose, a group of doctors has been formed and they are fully trained to perform the critical process.
Latest services to be available from September onwards
In order to assure enhanced facilities for the transplant, an OPD for liver patients has been initiated at the institute. According to the current schedule, the OPD services are available two days a week including, Monday and Friday. PGI Director and Liver Transplant Specialist Dr. R. K. Dhiman himself, is screening liver patients in the OPD. He informed that the liver transplant services will be provided to patients from September onwards.
The procedure will be performed in the Department of Hepatology, which has been set up at a cost of ₹200 crores in the institute. Additionally, the administration of the healthcare centre has also established an ICU facility with a total of 40 beds. Further, the management has successfully recruited an operation theatre resident and the associated health staff.
A team of 7 doctors headed by Dr. R. K. Dhiman to perform the procedure
Remarkably, Dr. R. K. Dhiman has performed more than 100 liver transplants and he has devised a framework for performing surgeries at the institute too. Under him, a team of 7 doctors from the Department of Hepatology will perform the liver transplants. It consists of 3 surgeons, 2 physicians, 2 anesthesiologists and 1 pathologist.
Further, separate teams of resident doctors and health workers will look after the proper conduction of the procedure at the institute. Notably, screening of OPD patients and prospective donors have already started at the centre and it is anticipated that the project will move into the implementation phase as per the decided timeline.
