The upcoming hockey stadium at the Peddem Sports Complex in Mapusa, is set to be named after one of the Indian hockey legends, Major Dhyan Chand. Notably, the decision was announced by the Chief Minister of Goa, on the occasion of the National Sports Day on August 29, which is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of this veteran sportsperson. Presently under construction, this hockey centre is pegged to be the first of its kind in Goa, which is being developed to host the 36th edition of the National Games.
State-of-the-art-facilities at the Goa hockey stadium
The Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant, announced the decision to name the Peddem hockey stadium after the veteran player, Major Dhyan Chand via a tweet. He labelled Dhyan Chand as “India’s greatest sporting legend” and informed that the state’s only hockey stadium will carry his name after the construction is completed here.
Major Dhyan Chand is one of the most revered names in the Indian hockey space. He was among the star players, who proved Indian dominance in this sport, by bagging gold medals in three consecutive Olympics (1928 Amsterdam, 1932 Los Angeles and 1936 Berlin).
The stadium is being built for the benefit of the Goan and Indian youth, the CM added. Reportedly, this will also be the only operational sports centre in Goa that will allow sportspersons to practice on an astroturf field. As of now, the construction of dressing rooms is going on here.
