In an ambitious effort to enhance traffic flow, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) has devised a new plan to widen the 76-kilometre-long Sardar Patel Ring Road to six lanes.
Stretching from Vaishnodevi-Sanand-Mehmadabad-Naroda to Zundal, the ring road plays a pivotal role in connecting key locations. It intersects with the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway at one point, crosses the Sabarmati River and spans the Mumbai-Delhi National Highway twice. As one of the city’s primary ring roads, the four-lane route accommodates daily movement of approximately 1 lakh vehicles.
AUDA to carry out widening project in two packages
The project will be divided into two packages to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion across the city. Under Phase 1, AUDA plans to widen a 37-kilometre stretch of the SP Ring Road in the eastern part of Ahmedabad. Phase 2 will focus on the western stretch, covering 39.254 kilometres in the western region of the city.
Along with this, the current two-lane and three-lane service roads will be expanded to four lanes, enhancing accessibility. The plan also includes the construction of footpaths and the development of green zones along the road to promote sustainability and improve pedestrian safety. As of now, AUDA has released tenders for the construction of the project.
New bridges to be constructed as a part of the widening project
Furthermore, the plan includes the construction of two new three-lane bridges on either side of the existing Bhat and Kamod Hayat bridges across the Sabarmati River. To alleviate traffic congestion at Bhat Circle, Chiloda Circle and Aslali Circle, six-lane underpasses will be built. Additionally, two-lane underpasses will be created near the Tragad underpass.
Other discussed proposals include building six-foot overbridges to provide safe pedestrian crossings for residents of the Town Planning schemes located along the Ring Road.
