Indore Municipal Corporation is known all over for its cleanliness drive. The IMC has added another laurel to its wreath, and has become the first urban body in the country to earn EPR credit. A major contributor to the factor was recycling banned single-use plastic items after seizing them.
According to reports IMC earned its first installment of EPR credit valued at Rs. 8,100 through an empaneled agency for Material Recovery Facility under PPP mode. The credit is earned on the EPR portal of the Central Pollution Control Board.
IMC’s unique waste management campaigns
The IMC collects around 164 tonnes of plastic waste on a regular basis in its municipal area. The process begins with the segregation of waste, which is divided into 6 types. These are, plastic waste, non-plastic waste, e-waste, household waste, hazardous waste, and wet waste, generated from various sources- domestic, commercial, and industrial institutions. Further, the waste is transported to centralized and decentralized material recovery facility, and is treated on the very same day without any human intervention.
IMC has launched various awareness programs and campaigns on social media such as “Plastic Heist Gang”, “Plastic Premier League”, and “Halla Bol Drive”. These were to inspire the general public towards avoiding using plastic. The IMC’s creative ways are trending all over the country, and comes across as a source of inspiration for other states.
