As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the streak of severe cold days will continue in numerous districts of Madhya Pradesh including Indore. As per the forecast, the winter gloom is likely to stretch until February 2. A rise in temperature will be observed post this wave. The department has also issued a warning regarding this severe cold wave for Indore, Datiya, Ujjain, Balaghat, Betul, Tikamgarh, etc.

In a report, IMD officials shared that in the last 24 hours, the minimum temperature recorded in Indore was 6.4°C. It has been the third week in Indore since the temperatures started dropping below normal.
The cold wave started around January 11 and 12. The lowest ever temperature recorded in the city was 1.1°C on December 16, 1935. The average lowest temperature here, in the past decade, has been around 5.6°C
With offices running on a reduced capacity and schools closed due to the third wave of the pandemic, the city had all the more reason to stay inside. Those who step outside are usually bundled in extra layers of warm clothes and heating gear. As people prefer to stay within their homes or offices during the days, almost all traffic dissipates by nightfall. The city streets are significantly cleared out by 8 PM.

At the state level, the temperature in Pachmarhi dropped to a freezing 1°C, the lowest across the state. While mercury dipped to only 5°C, other regions like Raisen, Umaria, and Rewa experienced even colder minimum temperatures.
Senior Meteorologist, G.D. Mishra pinned speedy dry winds, blowing at 12-15 kmph, as the reason for the cold wave across the state. He also added that the temperature is expected to rise after February 2.
