A well-perceived centre for art and related activities, the Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) of Jaipur was established in 1993 to address the need for incubating and nurturing artists and their creations. It is a spectacular stage that promotes classical and folk traditions, thereby, catering to the modern demand of preserving traditions while furthering innovations. Let’s embark upon a leisurely virtual stroll through the corridors of JKK to appreciate some of the aesthetic nuances that it wishes to acquaint us with!
Building design inspired by Navgraha
Late Charles Correa, a renowned Indian architect of international repute, is credited with designing the architecture of Jawahar Kala Kendra. The JKK building draws inspiration from the astronomical concept of navgraha (nine planets) and shares a resemblance with the grid plan of the Pink City.
The navgraha theme is evident in the design of the main complex of JKK, which has six exhibition galleries, an open-air theatre, auditoriums, dormitories, and a coffee house. Each of these sections mirrors the characteristics of the respective planet, for example, the library is located in the Jupiter section as it attributes to knowledge and wisdom. Further, the ceiling of the central dome is ominated by murals from Jain mythology, charts and other paintings.
Adjacent to the main JKK building is the Shilp Gram, which is often reserved as a venue for fairs, haats and festivals. A total of 6 huts are located in this 9.5-acre rural complex that represent different aspects of Rajasthan- Braj (Bharatpur), Hadauti (Kota), Tribal (Dungarpur), Desert (Barmer and Bikaner), Shekhawati (Sikar) and Centre (Jaipur).

Whenever the pandemic recedes, take a tour of JKK and explore the artistry displayed here. In this regard, the Coffee House located in the lunar section, which reveals the lesser-known aspects of Indian astronomy, reserves a special mention. Also, do not forget to sit and allow the aesthete in you to reflect upon your thoughts, as you inhale the sweet aroma of coffee!
