In a bid to boost women employment in the city, RTO Kanpur has floated a proposal to initiate the services of women-operated autos under the label of ‘Women’s Special Pink Auto’. These vehicles will ferry only women commuters, creating a sense of security among them as they opt for means of public transport. As per reports, the project will be granted the final nod by the Regional Transport Authority, in a meeting scheduled on January 28.

Kanpur authorities have set the premise for launching women-only autos in the city, which will be characterised by pink colour vehicles. Set to improve women employment ration, the plan of action also envelopes women’s safety under its wing. Men will also be able to apply for this scheme, however, lady drivers will be given preference, stated an RTO official.
Besides, special provision will also be established to train women under the ambit of the skill development mission. This programme will train women in lessons of driving commercial vehicles. As per reports, the Model Driving Training and Research Institute at Vikas Nagar will be employed to impart 400 hours of training to women applicants. The district officials have reported that about 27 women have been selected for this programme, out of the total 55 applications that were received from all over the state.

According to estimates, about 35,000 to 40,000 women travel daily in Kanpur and this initiative will be a boon for them. State capital Lucknow already has such provisions and the district is following its footsteps to iron-clad women safety in the city.
