In an attempt to boost the existing medical infrastructure in the city, King George Medical University in Lucknow has set up a new Liquid Medical Oxygen Plant on its premises. On Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor of KGMU, Lt Gen (Dr.) Bipin Puri inaugurated the plant in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Queen Mary Hospital).
With the addition of this oxygen plant, KGMU now has a storage capacity of 1.30 lakh litres of Liquid Medical Oxygen, higher than any other medical college in India.

Apart from the VC, Prof. Vineet Sharma, Head of Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics Department, Prof. Uma Singh and other faculty members of KGMU graced the inaugural event on Wednesday. Additionally, Linde’s South Asia Head Gases Molay Banerjee and Linde’s Head of Bulk & Packaged Gases RC Kaushik also marked their presence at this event in Lucknow.
According to Dr. Tanmay Tiwari, DMS of Oxygen Supply at KGMU with the addition of this new plant, there are 7 Liquid Medical Oxygen Plants operating at KGMU at present.
This initiative comes in line with the same thought of generating more oxygen to take care of the rising demands in the future. Notably, an oxygen plant was set up at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute in 2021 as well. Reportedly, this plant alone has the capacity to store around 20,000 litres of liquid oxygen.
