Mission Shakti was launched by the state government with an aim to eliminate the safety concerns regarding women and children in all districts of UP. Accordingly, to create awareness regarding the safety issues of teenagers in relation to sexual assaults, Lucknow University is organising a series of events under this campaign. The University is employing innovative methods, such as staging plays and holding discussions based on a TV show to engage the youth.
Theatre & poster-making competition to create awareness
With plans of staging two plays, Lucknow University has chosen an artistic way to spread awareness about sexual abuse and harassment. Through one of the plays, students will be informed about the basic details, such as whom to report, how to report and what legal action can be pursued, in case of a sexual misdemeanour. Further, a discussion and poster-making competition will also be organised to garner maximum participation.
The other play, showcasing the legal and empathetic support against harassment, is to be staged on campus by first-year MCA students. Following this event, a poster-making competition on sexual harassment and adolescence will be conducted. The events have been planned in a manner that appeals to the youth so that they connect and gain an understanding of adolescence and child sexual abuse.
First among the series of events planned by Lucknow University, was a discussion held on Sunday to highlight the issue of adolescence and child sexual abuse. This discussion was based on an episode of the famous TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ and it was worked into the schedule because the youth connect best with television, Prof. Sheela Mishra, coordinator of Mission Shakti, stated.
Making the state safer for women and children
The events planned by Lucknow University also includes a lecture on women and culture which will be delivered by the eminent psychologist, Anandana Trivedi. The recent initiatives by various organisations under Mission Shakti have furthered the agenda of making Uttar Pradesh safer for women and children by empowering them with knowledge and other relevant resources.
