Lucknow is all set to witness Weightlifting Assessment Camp at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre Of Excellence in the city. As per the plan, the athletes shortlisted after consultation with the Indian Weightlifting Federation will undergo a 21-day evaluation at the camp in the capital city. Based on this, a merit list of successful candidates will be prepared, who will then receive training at one of the 3 centres of excellence located in Patiala, Lucknow and Aurangabad.
Merit list to be curated after the 21-day camp
Currently, players are selected on the basis of trials at the centres of SAI. Through this method, many undeserving players join the camp by providing false information about past experiences. In a bid to weed out such unfit players from the association, the Sports Authority of India has decided to try this experiment for testing players and their skills before admission.
Post the 21-day camp, players will be judged as per their skills and a comprehensive merit list will be made. The high scorers from this merit list will then be moved to their preferred centres for their training. At present, apart from Lucknow, other centres are located in Aurangabad, Patiala and the North-East.
Talented & dedicated athletes to get chances on priority now
According to Mr. Sanjay Saraswat, the Executive Director of SAI, the list of players has been finalised already while their arrival is expected to start soon. Additionally, the training will start only after all participants are tested for the COVID infection. As per the official, priority will be given to the talented players who are willing to achieve something in the world of sports.
After remarkable achievements by the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the national and state officials have amped up efforts to ensure better infrastructure for the budding players. In addition to this, the induction and selection processes are also being improved and streamlined to make sure that the best talent is identified and nurtured.
