Currently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is developing what is being called one of the world’s largest network of metro rail in the world. This enormous network will consist of 14 metro rail lines, providing seamless connectivity between Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.
Out of the entire metro network planned by the MMRDA, which will stretch across 337.1 km, some lines are already operational while others are in different stages of construction or approval. Read on for details regarding all of them.
What’s up and running?
Currently, a total of 3 Mumbai Metro lines are operational. Collectively, these lines stretch across 46.5 km and include a total of 43 stations. Here are the details:

The fully elevated Line 1 (Blue Line) connects Versova to Ghatkopar and stretches across 11.40 km. Connecting the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai, there are 12 stations on this metro line.

Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Yellow Line) connects Dahisar East to DN Nagar and is 18.6 km long. Providing seamless connectivity between Western, Central, and the Northern Suburban Mumbai, this line has a total of 18 stations.

Lastly, the 16.5 km long Mumbai Metro Line 7 (Red Line), connecting Dahisar East to Gundavali, is also operational. This metro line features a total of 14 stations.
What’s under construction?

Mumbai’s first underground metro line, Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), is also under construction. However, Phase 1 of this 33.5 km long line, connecting BKC and Aarey Colony, is all set to become operational by September 2024.

Construction work on Mumbai Metro Line 2B (Yellow Line), which will connect D.N. Nagar to Mandale, is also underway. Stretching across 23.6 km, this line will consist of 22 stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 4 (Green Line) is also under construction. This line will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavli in Thane, spanning a total of 32.3 km. This one consists of 32 stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 4A (Green Line) will be an extension of Line 4 and it is also under construction. This 2.88 km line will connect Kasarvadavli to Gaimukh and will consist of just 2 stations.

Construction work is also progressing swiftly for Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line), which will connect Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan. Covering 24.9 km, this metro line will consist of 17 stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 6 (Pink Line) is also under construction. This 15.18 km long line will connect Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli, featuring a total of 13 stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 7A (Red Line), which will be an extension of Line 7, is also in its construction stages. This 3.17 km long line will connect Andheri East to the CSMI Airport, consisting of only two stations.

The 11.38 km long Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Red Line), also an extension of Line 7, will connect Dahisar East to Mira Bhayander. This under-construction metro line will consist of 8 stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 12 (Orange Line), an extension of Line 5, is also in the construction stage. This 22.17 km long line will operate between Kalyan and Taloja, featuring 19 stations.
What’s in the proposal, evaluation or approval stage?

The 45 km-long Mumbai Metro Line 14 (Magenta Line) is currently in its Detailed Project Report (DPR) phase. Connecting Kanjurmarg to Badlapur, this metro line will consist of 40 stations.

Similarly, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 23 km long Mumbai Metro Line 13 (Purple Line), which will connect Shivaji Chowk on Mira Road to Virar, has been prepared. This metro line will consist of 20 stations.

Work on Mumbai Metro Line 11 (Green Line), an extension of Line 4, has been handed over to MMRCL. Construction on this 12.8 km long line hasn’t begun yet. Connecting Wadala to CSMT, it will consist of 10 stations.

Mumbai Metro Line 10 (Green Line), another extension of Line 4, will connect Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk on Mira Road. Currently, the technical feasibility for this 9.2 km long metro line is under review.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Mumbai Metro Line 8 (Gold Line), is yet to be prepared. This 35 km long ‘ airport connector’ line will connect CSMI Airport to Navi Mumbai International Airport, consisting of 7 stations.
