Visitors can experience a range of elements that highlight Japanese art, culture, landscape, and architecture.
Taki Waterfall, Bonsai trees, Japanese lanterns, and more
The garden is the result of a collaborative effort between the Japan Information and Study Centre (JISC) at AMA and the Indo-Japan Friendship Association (IJFA), Gujarat. Its design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese Zen gardens, which were created by Buddhist monks in the 6th century as a means of meditation and spiritual reflection.
The central elements of the Zen Kaizen Garden—raked sand, carefully placed rocks, and minimalist design—serve to evoke a sense of calm and mindfulness.
The space features several other aspects that reflect Japan’s cultural heritage. The Taki Waterfall, Bonsai trees, royal garden pavilion, traditional Japanese lanterns (Toro), and the Red Arched Bridge, a common elements in Japanese gardens. These additions enhance the cultural experience of the garden, offering visitors insight into Japanese aesthetics and philosophy.
Find traditional Japanese art and architecture
One of the standout features is the Fusion Chabutro, a bird feeder built in the traditional Japanese Pagoda style. This unique structure symbolises the blend of Ahmedabad’s local traditions with Japanese influence. Kaizen Hall, located within the garden, embodies the Japanese philosophy of continuous improvement. It’s a space dedicated to learning and personal growth, reflecting the ethos of excellence at AMA.
Visitors can also admire the Kakemono, traditional Japanese hanging scrolls, and Nihonga paintings, which are examples of Japan’s celebrated artistic style using gold leaf and natural materials. These artistic elements add a rich cultural layer to the garden experience.
