For many Amdavadis, a visit to Kankaria Lake isn’t complete without stepping into the Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden. Established in 1951, this is one of the oldest zoos in the city, and it has been a part of childhood memories for generations. Spread over 117 acres along the picturesque periphery of Kankaria Lake, it attracts over 20 lakh visitors annually.
While it was initially created as a recreational space, it has grown into a crucial centre for wildlife conservation and education.

Home to a diverse range of wildlife, the zoo shelters majestic Asiatic lions, white tigers, leopards, and jackals, alongside nilgai (blue bulls), spotted deer, and blackbucks. The sight of Asiatic elephants and playful bears is always a crowd favourite. The zoo is now home to new tigers & black bucks from Gwalior’s Gandhi Zoological Park.
Bird lovers can marvel at the Emus, peafowls, and other exotic species, while reptile enthusiasts can explore the enclosures housing crocodiles, star tortoises, and various species of snakes.

The zoo was founded under the guidance of self-taught veterinarian and Padma Shri awardee, Reuben David. With support from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, it has developed into a well-maintained sanctuary known for its commitment to animal welfare.
Walking through its pathways, visitors can witness firsthand the zoo’s dedication to breeding endangered species and providing them with environments that closely mimic their natural habitats!
