Established in 1998, Naval Aviation Museum is an exhibition of naval armaments that have aided the sterling efforts of the Indian Navy in protecting the sea frontier. This museum was inaugurated by Admiral RH Tahiliani (Retd.)- the first Naval Pilot to land a fighter aircraft, ‘Hawker Sea Hawk’ on the deck of the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant on 18 May 1961.
The artefacts in the outdoor exhibit of this museum include, among other things, the Chukar- a pilotless aircraft used for training practice and a dissected view of the engines of aircraft like Sea Harrier and Tupelov-142M, which are pure engineering marvels. At the indoor exhibit, you will encounter the exquisite display of Vikrant Hall which houses models of various aircraft, the ceremonial crests of all Squadrons of the Indian Navy and other paraphernalia.
Survival equipment such as fighter aircraft’s ejection seat and life-rafts can also be located along with the depiction of a brief history of Goan liberation, in the Vikrant Hall. Further, the precinct also has a Cockpit Café located adjacent to the reception-cum-souvenir shop where hungry tourists can enjoy snacks and drinks!
Knock Knock
A visit to this museum and you will discover the charm of ‘navy blue’, apart from travelling through time and witnessing the history and evolution of naval armament in the context of the Indian Navy. Also, if you get a chance, don’t forget to get clicked inside dummy aircraft because such poses make for a great portrait for empty photo frames!
