This salt-crusted wetland of prominence is where antique folklore and ancient history amalgamate, to awe the tourists. One such tale is that of Shakumbhari Devi. As per locals, Goddess Shakumbhari bestowed the King of the land, Chauhan Rajputs, with precious silver stretches. However, he knew that this boon will easily turn into a bane if other kingdoms came to know of this wealth, therefore, he appealed to the Goddess to whitewash the landscape and today, we know it as Sambhar Lake.
According to another popular legend, Sambhar Lake has been mentioned in the Mahabharata as the residing place of priest Shukracharya. Apart from these myths surrounding this place, Sambhar Lake- the largest inland salt lake of India, is home to thousands of migratory birds, such as coots, stilts, avocets and more, which turn the horizon into a colourful affair during the winter season.
The allure of overwhelming limitlessness of this place is supplemented by historical structures, such as the 18th-century architectural marvels- Circuit House and the adjacent Kothi, built by the Britishers.
