A lot has been said about the city of Nawabs, as Lucknow is known for its incredible architecture, history, tehzeeb, and the royal vibe. The panoramic view of our eyes has often spotted the incredibly tall clock tower in Hussainabad, but little were we aware of the historical and beautiful Hussainabad Picture Gallery, adjacent to the clock tower. It is Lucknow’s one of the most ancient places, with paintings and portraits of Nawabs of Lucknow.
It takes 30 steps to reach the gallery
The historical masterpiece was built in 1838 by Lucknow’s Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah and served as a summer home of the royals. It was built as a ‘Baradari’, a place with 12 door-ways. The red-brick structure looks picturesque and monumental with a Nawabi aura, layered around it. It has a pond, surrounded by lush green lawns and a calming ambiance, amid the hustle of the city. It takes 30 steps to reach the picture gallery. The incredible pictures in the gallery, showcases the grandeur of Nawabs, with portraits of Nawabs in grand costumes and jewellery. According to popular beliefs, it is said that paintings in the gallery were made on elephant skin and the color used to fill them was developed with the help of diamonds.
Famous for portraits of Nawabs
It is one of the best places to visit in Lucknow for a walk down the rich heritage of Lucknow. At the entrance, visitors can find the famous portrait of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, among other famous Nawabs of Lucknow. A ticket to the Picture Gallery costs around Rs 10- Rs 20, with photography, strictly prohibited. The gallery is open from 8 AM to 5 PM, with slightly crowded weekends.
