Marching ahead with its new & evolved technological advancements, Lucknow Development Authority has built a road using the lasting Stone Matrix Asphalt Technology at Sharda Nagar Extention in Lucknow. According to the development body, this is the first road in the state that has been built by mixing plastic with ballast, Bitumen and hot mix asphalt. Notably, while this construction procedure is 1.5 times costlier than usual, the road built using this technology is 6 times stronger than the regular roads. Moreover, this technology is said to make roads more durable, making them last for as long as 20 years! In addition to extra durability, this technology also helps in reducing the carbon footprint. In the long run, this environment-friendly move is also cost-effective as there are no expenses for repair works.
What is SMA?
The Stone Matrix Asphalt technology was being used by the western world for a long time, however, the trend was later caught on by the Indian authorities in 2009. The SMA technology is basically the setting up of stone on stone which is fixed and held together by a paste of asphalt cement. To ensure this setting is stabilised, asphalt modifiers and fibres are also added to this mix. This mixture is first heated at a very high temperature before being laid down on the ground.
