After creating a lot of buzz over the past few years, the implementation of the first undersea rail tunnel project of India has finally caught pace. The 21-km long tunnel, including the 7-km long undersea rail route will be built between the underground stations of Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata. The 7-km long tunnel will be constructed about 25 to 65 metres below ground level, below the Thane creek.

As per the authorities of National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), the single tube tunnel will facilitate a twin track for the movement of trains in the tunnel. For this, tunnel boring machine and the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) will be put into use. Furthermore, the undersea tunnel will be a part of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai high speed rail project.
The railway ministry expects the first trial run of the bullet train on a brief 50 km portion in Gujarat by the year 2026. Owing to this NHSRCL has invited bids for its construction, with a deadline of January 29, 2023 for submissions.
