A treasure trove of ancient monuments
Patan was established by the Chavda ruler Vanaraja in the ninth century. Few people are aware that Patan is also the former capital of Gujarat.
Once in Patan, you’ll be amazed as the city offers plenty of tourist attractions including forts, vavs (step wells), talavs (lakes) and places of worship. The main tourist attractions here is Rani ki vav, also a World Heritage Site. Located on the banks of Saraswati River, it is a richly sculptured monument, built by Udaymati in memory of her husband, Bhima I.
Other historically and archaeologically important sites such as Sahastralinga Tank, Anand Sarovar (Gungadi Talav) and Khan Sarovar are pretty decent tourist spots.
The delicate art of Patan’s Patola Sarees
Patola sarees are one the finest hand-woven sarees produced today, originating from Patan. It is famous for extremely delicate patterns woven with great precision and takes upto four to six months to make, depending on the designs.
