Vastrapur Lake redevelopment
After lying dormant for two decades, a proposal for the redevelopment of Vastrapur Lake has finally been presented to the Water Supply and Sewerage Committee. The ambitious project, estimated at a cost of 5.15 crores, aims to transform the Vastrapur Lake premises into a year-round water-filled haven. The redevelopment plan includes the construction of walkways and other amenities for public use.
In a meeting, the Water Supply and Sewerage Committee will review and discuss the proposal for the project. Originally developed by Auda in 2003, the lake suffered significant damage over the years, with rats causing havoc on walkways and walls. To prevent a recurrence of this issue, the municipality plans to employ preventive measures, such as installing glass barriers at lower levels.
Book exhibition highlights lives and poetry of disabled individuals
To commemorate World Handicapped Day, Gujarat University Granthalaya organized an insightful exhibition featuring books and poetry on the lives of disabled individuals. The exhibition showcased approximately 50 books dedicated to topics such as handicap, child vocational counseling for physical disabilities, and rehabilitation.
Additionally, Gujarat University Library boasts an impressive collection of over 20,000 e-resources focusing on Persons With Disabilities (PWD).
Nalsarovar welcomes diverse bird species as winter sets in
As winter unfolds, birds are making their annual pilgrimage to Nalsarovar, located 63 km from the city. The picturesque lake hosts over 220 species of birds during the three winter months, attracting thousands of visitors.
Enthusiasts can witness the stunning presence of flamingos, pelicans, falcons, grayleg geese, night herons, and kingfishers. The early morning hours at dawn transform Nalsarovar into a breathtaking spectacle with the beauty of these birds.
Surge in admissions of students with disabilities at city universities
Ahmedabad’s university campuses are experiencing a positive trend with a steady rise in admissions for students with disabilities. While the numbers remain modest, the increase is attributed to reserved quotas and the implementation of assistive devices, accessible facilities, and the unwavering support of faculty and fellow students.
Currently, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has 29 students with multiple disabilities.
