Natural disasters primarily harm the farmers in India. Crop insurance protects farmers against the loss of crops due to natural disasters, extreme weather, or revenue loss owing to price fluctuations in the agricultural market. The crop insurance policies aim to secure farmers against crop failure-related losses by managing yield and price risks. In addition, private insurance companies or governments can also provide information on reducing losses with the help of technological advancement in the field.
Along with the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna (PMFBY), there are three more such schemes that provide monetary benefits as well as technological benefits to the farmers against any kind of loss. These three schemes are the Weather-based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS), Pilot Unified Package insurance scheme (UPIS) and Coconut Palm insurance scheme (CPIS).

Under the central government’s funds to improve agricultural infrastructure in the villages, the Madhya Pradesh government is entitled to a maximum of ₹12,000 crores out of which ₹1,000 crores has been sanctioned to the state.
In the last 20 months, ₹1,72,894 crores have been deposited in the accounts of farmers under the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. Under the central government’s umbrella scheme to protect farmers, a total of ₹7,681 crores has been compensated against crop loss. Disbursement of ₹380.54 crores has been done in the Indore district against 1.86 lakh claims.
Additionally, the state has also witnessed a rapid increase in the area of irrigated land from 6 lakh hectares in 2003 to 46 lakh hectares at the present date. With an aim to upscale the Agri infrastructure in the state, the state government with the help of various other Agri oriented schemes plans to increase the irrigated land area to 65 lakh hectares.

PFMBY was implemented and launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi six years ago on February 18, 2016, at Sehore, replacing the existing two schemes National Agricultural Insurance Scheme as well as the Modified NAIS. The drive ‘Meri Policy, Mere Hath’ was also introduced first during the same time.
The scheme provides a uniform premium of only 2% to be paid by farmers for all Kharif crops, 1.5% for all Rabi crops and in the case of annual commercial and horticultural crops, the premium to be paid by farmers will be only 5%.
The scheme covers over 5.5 crore farmer applications on a year-on-year basis. With the help of Aadhaar seeding, the claim settlement process has taken pace, providing a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) facility to the farmers. The scheme was made voluntary for all farmers, after its revamp in February 2020. Further, the states have also been provided flexibility to rationalise the sum insured so that adequate benefits can be availed by farmers
