The effects of the coronavirus pandemic have left another glaring impression on the education system. As per reports, all government-run schools in Uttar Pradesh will cancel examinations up to class 8. With this, the state has struck off a written assessment for the second consecutive year. Students will be internally marked on the basis of their performance throughout the academic session for promotion, stated officials.

It has been acknowledged that students attending government-run schools in UP hail from economically weaker sections of society. As a result, they could not be a part of online classes or attend digital classrooms, which were flagged off last year in July. Consequently, studies have been affected for almost the entire academic session, as physical classes resumed recently, after a 10-month lockdown.
Schools reopened for classes 6-8 on February 10 and for classes 1-5 from March 1, giving students no time to complete the academic syllabus or prepare for the exams. Keeping this timeline in mind, the state has called off written examinations for all classes up to class 8 here. Last year too, students up to Class 8 were also promoted without examinations, on the basis of internal assessment as schools were closed under the nationwide lockdown in an attempt to arrest the growth of coronavirus cases.
Additional Chief Secretary of Education said, “We are running a 100 day ‘Prerna Gyanotsav’ programme for children up to class 8. The students will be assessed on this and promoted to the next class.”
