India has unveiled the first look of its proposed debut bullet train, set to operate on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. The image of the high-speed train has been installed at Gate No. 4 of the Ministry of Railways building in New Delhi. According to Indian Railways, the display showcases the design of the upcoming train, which is expected to become India’s first high-speed rail service.
Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train to launch by 2027
Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is scheduled to begin operations on August 15, 2027. Once operational, the bullet train is expected to cut travel time between the two cities to nearly two hours. The project is being developed by the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).
Major tunnel work underway in Mumbai
The unveiling comes shortly after NHSRCL announced a key construction milestone in Mumbai. The first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead has now been lowered at Vikhroli for the underground tunnel section of the project. The 13.6-metre-wide cutterhead, weighing 350 tonnes, marks the final stage in assembling the TBM’s main shield. Two massive TBMs, each weighing over 3,000 tonnes, are being deployed to construct a 16-km section of the 21-km-long Mumbai tunnel.
Tunnel to connect Vikhroli and BKC
Approximately 6 km of the tunnel between Vikhroli and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) will be carved out using the TBMs. The route will pass beneath densely populated parts of Mumbai and the Mithi river before reaching the under-construction bullet train station at BKC.
