Goa’s forest ministers announced to declare Goa's Vagheri hill an eco-sensitive area. This was done after a large clearing was found atop the hill forest in January. On inspection, it was found that the land on the historical Vagheri hill was being cleared for an unauthorised project.

Following this report, the authorities sprang into action and ordered an inspection. The forest officials have been instructed to regularly use satellite images to detect any change in forest canopies in eco-sensitive areas across the state.

Notably, some of the highest peaks in Goa can be found in the Sattari taluka, including the Vagheri hills. The historical hill was once the natural habitat of the Panthera tigris or striped tiger, from where it derives its name. It is the main part of Goa’s nature and plays a pivotal role in Goa’s beauty. This is why, the large unauthorised clearance of land on the Vagheri Hills raised concerns for authorities.

As per the reports, more such areas will be monitored using Google imagery tools. The move is aimed to conserve the dense canopy areas in the state.

Reportedly, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), the Chief Conservator of Forest, North and South Deputy Conservators of Forest and a member secretary have been instructed to lead an investigation on the systematic forest canopy clearance.

Additionally, a nodal officer will also be appointed in the state forest department to monitor and act against such violations.
